shibori

Shibori Art

A few years ago, I began creating new type of artwork which combined my acrylic painting on fabric and hand dyeing fabric with Shibori techniques. Shibori originated in Japan. The process of twisting, folding, and sewing the cloth before dyeing produces a variety of designs. Though there are certain techniques to use to create particular designs, the design turns out unique every time. It is always a delightful surprise to open the cloth after it has been dyed to see what has been created!

To create my wall hangings, I sew together the dyed cloth, a combination of machine and hand stitching, and add other details, such as beads, pearls, and ribbon. I enjoy adding another unique touch to each wall hanging, such as an acrylic painting of a Monarch butterfly, which is a bold contrast to the shades of blue.

I have also used Shibori techniques to dye silk scarves, cloth napkins, and silk face masks.
